Saint Patrick’s Day 2024
The Saint Patrick’s Day celebrated on 17th of March every year and the Saint Patric’s Day 17th March 2024 will be celebrated with great enthusiasm like always. It is a Roman Catholic holiday since around 9th or 10th century.
The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in America which is now called St. Augustine, Florida, in 1601. The Spanish settlement had an Irish Vicar who was responsible for organizing the festivities.
In 1772, another parade was held in honor of St. Patrick by the homesick Irish soldiers who were serving in the English Army. Soon the celebrations were all over the place. After the Great Potato Famine, the United States experienced great number of Irish immigrants.
Who is Patron Saint Patrick?
There may be some of you who may not be familiar with Patron Saint Patric; therefore, I am adding this section for you guys.
As per the history books, St. Patrick was born in Roman Britain, not in Ireland. He was kidnapped at 16 and was brought to Ireland as a slave. He did escape the slavery; however, returned to Ireland along with Christianity.
Saint Patrick explained the Holy Trinity which was composed of Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit using the three leaves of shamrock which is also referred as Irish clover.
People celebrate the death anniversary of St Patrick’s on 17th of March every year. This day falls in the Lent’s Christian season and it is generally allowed to break rules from lenten meat-eating, fasting, and other rules. Even Irish Catholics can opt for corned beef and cabbage along with whiskey and green beer on this day.
Irish In America/USA
In the early days, immigrants faced a lot of hardships and they were looked as the inferior people. Most of the daily newspapers fuelled the stereotype by calling them drunken fighters.
American Irish people soon realized that they are great in number and can make real impact in American political eco-system. Their voting block was known as “green machine”, where they could easily make or break any political candidate’s chances of victory. Therefore, the St Patrick’s Day parade, which they used to ridicule, is a must-attend event for politicians. This whole number power helped them to get legitimised in American and helped them build a reputation for theirselves.
In 1948, the Saint Patric’s Day in New York City was attended by the President Harry S. Truman which was a big deal for Irish Americans and a sign of importance for them.
What are the Local Tradition on St. Patrick’s Day?
There are various common tradition that is followed on the St. Paddy’s Day which I am going to discuss here.
The most common tradition on St Paddy’s Day ( never even say Patty’s Day) is dying the Chicago River green. Mostly, New York, Chicago, Boston, and Savannah celebrate the day to the fullest.
In Minnesota, the parade is hosted by the St. Pat’s Association, which includes a Miss Shamrock and Shamrock Princess, a Mr. Pat and his Blarney Brothers, Irish dignitaries, and families clad wearing the perfect St Patrick’s Day outfit along with some really cool accessories.
Normally, the day is started with the act of charity. For example, the city of St. Paul collects food and money for the food shelves through the March Out Hunger program which is given to the needy people.
People celebrating the day usually wear Green along with traditional Irish gears for Parades, pub crawls, and gatherings.
Mostly, the traditional dress for St Patrick’s Day Outfit includes the Kilt which is a perfect apparel for festivals and special occasions. You need to add kilt pins, broaches, and a sporran to complement your day outfit.
Ireland & St. Patty’s Day
You might have heard people saying that Ireland doesn’t even celebrate the St. Patrick’s Day as it is an American Holiday which is totally False.
On March 17th, St. Patrick is celebrated across the globe including Ireland. In Dublin, the St Patty’s Parades and Shenanigands only took place at the day (where albeit is a big part). All the landmarks in Dublin are turned green. Most of the museums offer free workshops, movies, and history tours. There are lots of people visiting Guinness Storehouse and St. Patric’s Cathedral.
What is the Snake Myth?
There is a long myth related to St Patrick that Saint Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland. According to the legends, St Patrick stood on hilltop, dressed in green, and waved his staff at the snakes, ordering them all to the sea. And this resulted in wiping out all the snakes out of Ireland.
The reality is that, Ireland was covered in ice and no snakes could survived that. However, after the ice melted the snakes could come back to Ireland. But the melt, separated the Ireland from Europe’s mainland with a 12-mile water gap of the North Channel between Ireland and neighbouring Scotland. This separation caused the snake not to come back to Ireland.
The root of the Snake myth is that the Snakes were a symbol of Paganism and when St. Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland, he wiped the snakes out the region.
You might have heard about lobaircin whose literal translation is the “small-bodies fellow”. The Celtic history is full of beliefs in fairies and monsters.
